Enjoyable San Diego Cycling Paths and Routes
San Diego’s mix of weather, terrain, and natural beauty makes it one of America’s top biking communities. San Diego and surrounding San Diego County communities have a large network of paths and routes for San Diego cycling. Casual riders may enjoy bicycling in local parks; however, more experienced individuals may prefer the workout and challenge of longer destination rides. San Diego Bike Paths
The route from Ocean Beach to La Jolla represents one of the most traveled courses, and includes the Mission and Pacific Beach Boardwalk. East Mission Bay has a beautiful bike path frequented by hikers as well as cyclists. Many people extend the three-mile path to include a four-mile loop that goes around Fiesta Island. The nine-mile long Silver Strand path, which caters to hikers and cyclists, routinely receives accolades as one of the most scenic and beautiful routes in the Southern California region. Start the ride at Ferry Landing Marketplace and cycle to Imperial Beach. Cyclists of all bike riding skill levels may enjoy this ride across flat landscape.
San Luis Rey River Trail
This paved bicycle trail snakes long the San Luis Rey River, a 500-foot wide body of water that runs east-west route to Oceanside, California. The one-way path/hiking track amounts to a 14.4-mile roundtrip on mostly straight and flat terrain. As one of the longest dedicated trails for San Diego biking, cyclists will appreciate the absence of traffic lights, but do not put bicycle safety on the back burner.
Begin the journey at the North side of Oceanside pier. Once you reach the Benet Road and Fussat Road entry points the view becomes more panoramic. Cyclists looking for more of a fitness challenge can exit at these points and ride on the terrain to the north, which consists of rolling landscape and undeveloped land.
Pacific Coast Highway
As one of the most scenic bike routes in the country, the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) runs the entire length of the California coastline. Many people refer to the portion of the trail between San Diego and Oceanside as the “Historic 101.” Many cyclists start at Del Mar and cycle north to the Camp Pendleton Marine Base. You will need identification to cycle through the base. The terrain consists of flat land and rolling terrain and you can exit at any point along the way to discover some of California’s most interesting communities, including La Jolla, Encinitas, Carlsbad and Oceanside.
