According to NBC Local San Diego, the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) will continue its annual tradition of promoting alternative transportation among San Diego youth by providing elementary school students with free bicycles. This holiday season, MTS chose the first-grade class of Encanto Elementary School. The San Diego Police Department and Fleet Weather Center’s Navy Crew are working hand in hand with MTS to add an educational element to the gift giving. Recent updates on the development of the Bicycle Master Plan are looking good for San Diego cyclists. According to ABC 10 Local News, the San Diego City Council voted unanimously to adopt the Bicycle Master Plan on December 9.  The well-received plan has been in development for five years. Councilman Mark Kersey said, “This is an extremely well-researched and impressive plan.” In addition, both mayoral candidates, David Alvarez and Kevin Faulconer, are public supporters of the plan. The plan will, over the course of 20 years, develop the San Diego bicycle infrastructure by adding an additional 595 miles of bicycle safe zones to the existing 72 miles of paths, 309 miles of lanes, 113 miles of routes and 16 miles of freeway shoulders. “We want to get more people riding as a mainstream form of transportation,” said the executive director of the San Diego Bicycle Coalition. “Bicycling can transform our…
