Oceanside Cyclist Killed in Hit and Run

Oceanside police are looking for a hit-and-run driver who fatally injured a bicyclist and then fled the scene. An employee of the San Luis Rey Water Treatment Plant found the victim lying in the road near the facility at 6 a.m. on Sunday, September 21. The man found the victim and his badly damaged bike on North River Road near Baker Street, along with evidence of a crash. First responders tried to revive the victim, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are holding off on revealing the cyclist’s identity until his family can be notified. Police found evidence of a collision at the scene, including tire marks, glass shards and other debris.  Investigators believe the hit-and-run car was a lime green Kia Soul from 2012 or 2013. After the accident, the car would be missing a headlight and have front-end damage on the passenger side. Anyone with…

New Law Requires Three Foot Buffer Zone Around Cyclists

On September 16, a new law goes into effect requiring drivers to leave three feet of buffer space when passing a cyclist. Certain drafts of the bill would have allowed drivers to cross a double yellow line to pass a cyclist, or required them to slow down to 15 mph when passing within three feet. Brown argued that these conditions could lead to more accidents…

Cyclist Paralyzed After Drunk Driver Crashes Into Group Ride

Several members of the San Diego Bicycle Club were seriously injured after a wrong-way driver collided with a group of cyclists on Fiesta Island. On Tuesday, August 12, the club was finishing their weekly ride when a car traveling against traffic plowed into the group head-on. The impact injured at least 10 cyclists and left one rider paralyzed. A 49-year-old father of two was riding close to the front of the group when he saw the car heading their way. He managed to push at least one cyclist out of the way but suffered critical injuries in the process. The La Jolla father was the most seriously injured of all the cyclists, suffering two punctured lungs, the loss of one kidney, a lacerated spleen and six broken vertebras. Doctors at UCSD Hillcrest Hospital are focusing on healing the man’s lungs so he can undergo spinal surgery, but they believe the…
