Hit-And-Run Driver Ordered to Stand Trial for Injuring San Diego Cyclist

On May 29, a 51-year-old Ramona man was ordered to stand trial for a hit-and-run accident that severely injured a San Diego cyclist. Back in October, Douglas Lane was traveling down State Route 67 when he attempted to pass two cars on the right, cutting them off in the process. During the maneuver, his side mirror struck Ambika Sundarsan, a bicyclist who was traveling on the right shoulder. Witnesses report that the impact cracked Sundarsan’s helmet and knocked her to the ground. Lane did not stop, but police located him several miles from the scene, because he pulled over to speak with one of the drivers he cut off. After their investigation, the police took Lane into custody and released him on a $50,000 bond. Sundarsan was on the road that morning to participate in a bicycle ride for cancer research. City Leaders Unveil San Diego Bike Loop

San Diego cyclists have a brand new way to see the sights thanks to a new bike path, introduced in the interests of helping San Diego become a “world-class bike city”. City leaders have announced the completion of the San Diego Bike Loop, a circular route designed to lead bicycling enthusiasts on a picturesque tour of the area’s top attractions. The 7.3-mile route leads riders through well-known San Diego landmarks like Balboa Park, the Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy and Seaport Village. Recreational and professional riders alike can use the path to visit popular destinations like Petco Park, the USS Midway Museum and San Diego Bay as well. Much of the route is designated by navigation symbols called “sharrows,” a set of arrows indicating a shared lane for both bikes and cars. Supervisors Approve Study Into Bicycling Tube Over San Diego Bay

Since the 1980’s, Del Mar architect Lew Dominy has had a vision of runners and cyclists being able to cross the San Diego-Coronado Bridge in an enclosed tube suspended almost 200 feet over the water.  After several setbacks, Dominy is finally getting approval to study the project, thanks to a $75,000 grant approved by San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox and others. The money for the study comes from a $1 million fund that each supervisor uses to invest in the community, through what is known as Neighborhood Reinvestment Program grants. The study is meant to make sure that the almost 50-year-old bridge is structurally sound, and has enough seismic integrity to support the added weight of the walkway. The study will also examine public safety and emergency response potential. Another concern is that the pedestrian walkway could cause problems for the Navy.
