San Diego’s Bike to Work Day Postponed Due to Wildfire

San Diego’s annual Bike to Work Day is a big deal. For the uninitiated, Bike to Work Day is a national event usually held on the third Friday in May, national bike month, in which commuters are encouraged to give the car a break and take two wheels to work Last year’s event included approximately 8,400 participants, a 16 percent increase from 2012. Furthermore, nearly 10,000 gallons of gas were saved. Bike to Work Day is a win-win for everyone; even those who do not participate enjoy the luxury of decreased traffic. Hopefully, Bike to Work Day will convince more motorists to support San Diego’s bike boom. Unfortunately, the Bike to Work Day previously scheduled for May 16 was postponed until May 30 due to the wildfire raging around San Diego. The Amgen Tour Sets Out in Sacramento

Spirits were high and the excitement was contagious as the Amgen Tour of California officially began in Sacramento. The 123-mile opening ride took riders on a loop along the Sacramento River, then up to Auburn and back downtown. The eight-day event is considered the height of cycling fever in America, and attracts some big names, like Peter Sagan, Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish. The ride covers 700 miles of California hillside and has previously been held in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Cyclists took off from the starting line at 10:50 a.m., moments after the national anthem was sung, while onlookers cheered and snapped pictures with their phones. The ride started off ceremonially, with riders traveling at moderate speeds until they hit the open road. Family Gathers to Mourn Bicyclist Killed by Drunk Driver

Recently, friends and loved ones gathered in Coronado to mourn the death of a cyclist who they remember as a caring, dedicated father and husband. David Voigt, 44, was riding home from his job at the Sweetwater Water Authority when a drunk driver struck and killed him. Michael Reyes was driving a Nissan Maxima that had been reported stolen when he cut across oncoming traffic near J Street and Dennis Avenue. The Maxima jumped the curb, striking Voigt so hard that his bike split in two. Voigt was critically injured and transported to a local hospital, but died shortly afterwards. Reyes, believed to be intoxicated at the time of the crash, survived but was seriously injured. The police arraigned him a few days later from his hospital bed, charging him with gross vehicular manslaughter, vehicle theft, driving with a suspended license and possession of a controlled substance.
