Is Pershing Drive Bike Safe?

Pershing Drive has the potential to be one of the most popular bike routes in San Diego. The road is well groomed, travels through idyllic scenery and connects North Park to Downtown. Yet, cyclists often avoid traveling on Pershing Drive, because the road has a reputation for bicycle injuries. After the intersection with Florida Drive, Pershing essentially becomes an entrance ramp for the freeway. As such, motorists begin speeding up in preparation for the freeway, increasing the possibility of fatal collisions with cyclists. If cyclists want to exit Pershing to ride to Downtown, there are two dedicated crosswalks; however, these crosswalks are located past the Florida intersection and near turns in the road. Where Can I Bike Safely In San Diego?

Road hazards are a leading cause of bicycle accidents in the San Diego area.  Many of the road hazards that cause road bicycle accidents are municipally owned, such as railroad tracks and manholes. As such it is often difficult to prove local government liability for bicycle accidents because even a fully functional manhole in good condition can be hazardous to a bicyclist. For the safety of young cyclists, municipal governments can set aside protected riding areas that are free from road hazards. A group of Carlsbad residents are lobbying local officials to set aside a safe zone for children to ride their bicycles without dangerous motor vehicles and road hazards. Single Mother Seriously Injured In San Diego Bicycle Accident

According to NBC San Diego, the individual responsible for seriously injuring a 38-year-old cyclist in October of 2013 was arrested and charged on Sunday, January 5. The 50-year-old motorist was traveling down SR-67 in a Dodge Ram 3500 on the morning of October 26, 2013, when he collided with another motorist in the stretch in which the road narrows from one to two lanes.  The 50-year-old motorist swerved into the bike lane in an attempt to cut off the other driver. In doing so, he struck a 38-year-old cyclist. According to court documents, the motorist was so enraged at the other driver that he neither saw nor felt the impact with the cyclist. The impact broke the victim’s neck and collar bone, resulting in a concussion. Months later, the victim is still in a limited mobility state of recovery.
