Single Mother Seriously Injured In San Diego Bicycle Accident

According to NBC San Diego, the individual responsible for seriously injuring a 38-year-old cyclist in October of 2013 was arrested and charged on Sunday, January 5. The 50-year-old motorist was traveling down SR-67 in a Dodge Ram 3500 on the morning of October 26, 2013, when he collided with another motorist in the stretch in which the road narrows from one to two lanes.  The 50-year-old motorist swerved into the bike lane in an attempt to cut off the other driver. In doing so, he struck a 38-year-old cyclist.

According to court documents, the motorist was so enraged at the other driver that he neither saw nor felt the impact with the cyclist. The impact broke the victim’s neck and collar bone, resulting in a concussion. Months later, the victim is still in a limited mobility state of recovery. The victim can speak despite barely being able to move her neck. The victim, a single mother, said, “[i]t’s been life altering not just for myself, but for my kids. Every parent would like their child’s life to be this carefree, and I know it’s not been for my kids now.”

The San Diego bicycle community is deeply upset by the incident. The executive director of the San Diego County Bike Coalition said the accident was “an avoidable tragedy,” because “[t]he cyclist in this case was doing absolutely everything right.” He continued, “[t]here’s no place for road rage, particularly when you’re dealing with the safety of people out on the road.”
