Is San Diego Becoming More Bicycle Friendly?

Is San Diego Becoming More Bicycle Friendly?San Diego was recently host to the National Bicycle Tourism Conference (NBTC), a four-day tour of downtown San Diego and Coronado Island that celebrated the near-completion of the Bayshore Bikeway. This is the first time in the history of the NBTC that San Diego has ever been chosen, showing that the city has become friendlier to the idea of cycling as a main mode of transportation and recreation.

The Bayshore Bikeway is a 24-mile stretch around San Diego Bay that will provide a scenic route through major tourist destinations as well as local employers. Presently, 15 miles of bicycle paths have been constructed. Once completed, the bikeway will not only be an extremely beautiful bike route, but it will help make cycling an even more accepted and popular mode of transportation.

Cyclists gathered at the county administration building to meet with Supervisor Greg Cox, cycling activists and local media to kick off the NBTC. Participants then loaded themselves onto a Ferry, where they were given an update about the state of cycling in San Diego and the positive direction that it is headed in. Cycling has already seen a boom in popularity in Coronado, with an estimated 70 percent of children riding to school.

How Will San Diego Benefit From the Bayshore Bikeway?

Aside from offering additional modes of transportation that do not cause pollution and clutter the roads, the people of San Diego will be able to enjoy easy access to shopping centers, recreational centers and scenic beaches. Health benefits of cycling include increased cardiovascular fitness, increased muscle strength, decreased stress levels, decreased body fat levels and reduced anxiety and depression.

Cycling is not only good for physical health, but mental health as well. Additionally, no one anywhere else in the country will get to enjoy the perfect weather and scenic view of such a beautiful city on his or her way to work.
