Monument at Sacramento State Serves as Reminder for Cyclists

A monument has been erected in Sacramento to serve as a reminder to drivers and cyclists of the death of a young cyclist who was killed while riding her bike, according to 3 KCRA News in Sacramento.  The monument is a “ghost bike” and was placed near the Sacramento State campus. May has been designated as bicycle safety month and advocates are hoping this reminder will be effective for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. A 22-year-old woman was killed near the site of the new monument while riding her bike on April 1.  According to Sacramento police, she was not wearing reflective clothing.  On April 10, a 17-year-old gilr was hit by two vehicles in Land Park, not far from Sacramento State.  She survived the accident, but police said she was very lucky to be alive because she was not wearing a bicycle helmet. “Don’t Be A Jerk” Campaign to Feature Celebrities

The New York City Department of Transportation recently launched its “Don’t Be a Jerk” campaign to promote bicycle safety, according to MyFOXNY.com.  The campaign, accompanied by a video message, features celebrities in a humorous fashion. Some of the celebrities featured in the campaign video include Mario Batali, John Leguizamo and Paulina Porizkova.  The performers in the video urge both cyclists and pedestrians to obey rules and use caution as much as possible.  They remind cyclists to always yield to pedestrians, ride along with the direction of traffic and to ride on the street as opposed to the sidewalk. Commuter cycling in New York City has increased 262% from 2000 to 2010, according to the Department on Transportation, making bicycle safety more important than ever. “As our streets have become safer and as more New Yorkers take to two wheels, bike riders need to adopt a street code,” said Commissioner Sadik-Khan….

The Blind Stokers Club Prepares for ‘Cycling for Sight’ Fundraiser

The Bonnici Law Group APC is a proud supporter of the Blind Stokers Club, a bicycling club that pairs blind cyclists with a sighted Captain on a tandem bicycle.  The Blind Stokers Club members are currently training for the annual Cycling for Sight fundraiser in July, which is a 200-mile ride.  The event is scheduled for July 15-17, 2011. The money raised will go toward the San Diego Center for the Blind and the Blind Stokers Club. The Blind Stokers Club has participated in Cycling for Sight in years past and is excited to be a part of the fundraiser again this year. Cycling for Sight began its annual fundraiser in 2002. The Cycling for Sight event spans three days as the tandems ride along the beautiful Southern California coast, starting and ending in La Jolla, home to the famous Torey Pines.
