Bicycle safety is extremely important for a community like San Diego, which are known for having a high population of cyclists. Whether you are a fair weather rider or a daily cyclist, a little extra bike safety knowledge can keep you out of harm’s way. Avoid riding during rush hour- Almost 70 percent of all bicycle accidents in San Diego occur between the hours of 4pm and 8pm. Avoid University Avenue- a study by Circulate San Diego released a study that showed that about 30 percent of bike accidents happened on the same eight roads, and that University Avenue was the most dangerous. Streets like University Ave. that have wide lanes, parked cars on the side, and no bike lanes are considerably more dangerous than other streets. San Diego Cyclist Hit By Wrong-Way Driver Adjusts to Paralysis

In August 2014, avid cyclist Juan Carlos Viñolo was hit by a car traveling the wrong way on Fiesta Island. Viñolo’s shoulder smashed into the car’s windshield and his legs whipped over his head and onto the roof of the vehicle. He dislocated a clavicle, broke eight ribs and cut his hands. He lost a kidney, damaged his liver, lungs and spleen. His spine was severed, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. Recovering from a Traumatic Cycling Accident Today, nearly a year later, he’s adjusting to life as a paraplegic. His wife has been pushing him hard to adjust to his new life, and he’s received much support from the San Diego cycling community.
