Are California Cities Warming Up to the Idea of Cycling?

A San Francisco bike lane has been awarded the honor of being in America’s Ten Best Bike Lanes of 2014. PeopleForBikes, a national bike advocacy group consisting of representatives from the cycling industry, retailers and cycling advocates, awarded the bike lane the prestigious honor, because it is a protected contra-flow lane on a very busy street. A contra-lane means that bike traffic is going the opposite direction of vehicle traffic. San Francisco’s Regional Transportation Agency has applauded the award-winning lane, saying that it honors a strong commitment to keep cyclists safe. When Will San Diego’s New Bike Share Program Open?

San Diego is in the process of rolling out a bike-sharing program that will take advantage of new bike lanes and reduce traffic throughout the city. Every year, cyclists are injured or killed due to a lack of visibility. Current law requires that a bicycle be equipped with a red reflector on the rear, and visible from 500 feet if being operated in the dark along a highway, sidewalk or bikeway. Assembly Bill 28 will add to the current law by requiring that a bicycle operating under those conditions use a white flashing light or requiring the rider to wear reflective gear. Most cycling accidents occur in urban areas, and unfortunately, California has the highest number of fatal accidents. In 2012, California had 123 deaths from cycling accidents. Efforts to improve upon the safety of cyclists to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities have been underway in several cities. Many cities are…
