Alert Bus Driver Foils Driver’s Getaway

This video from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania captures a terrifying hit-and-run incident on the freeway. After striking a cyclist, this motorist immediately attempts to flee with absolutely no consideration for the victim. The cyclist was riding in the street due to construction on the roadway. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation created a walkway along the road, but it is for pedestrians and cyclists are not permitted to use it. The quick thinking by this bus driver to halt the fleeing motorist proved to be effective, as well as the driver who backed the car in behind the bus. “Los Angeles Police Department Sergeant David Krumer and Commander David Doan sorted through massive collision data for 2008, and found that in 2008, 23 percent of bike involved traffic collisions are hit-and-run—3 percent were misdemeanor and 20 percent were felonies,” said a report published by BikeSideLA.org. Cyclists Ride West Coast for a Good Cause

A group of 27 cyclists are riding along the Pacific Coast to raise money and awareness for the Fuller Center for Housing, a Georgia-based nonprofit that builds homes for the poor. The ride began in Seattle on July 15 and finishes in San Diego, where the cyclists will repair two houses in Oceanside. “I’ve been on two [bike rides], east coast and west coast,” says participant Carmen Price, 20, from Tennessee. “This has the scenery. That had the cities. We went from Saco, Maine, to Key West, Florida.” The participants agreed to raise money before the ride as well as solicit donations along the way. “This summer we’ve raised about $170,000,” says Ryan Iafigiola, director of field operations for the Fuller Center. “Our goal is $200,000. That money goes to offer people opportunities to have a simple, decent place to live. We do a lot of renovations and repairs.” This…

Bicycle Safety for Children

This is a great educational video for young cyclists from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Before getting on their first bike, children must understand the importance following bicycle safety laws. Keep some of these statistics in mind when teaching your children about bicycle safety: Approximately 51,000 cyclists were injured in collisions with a motor vehicle in 2009. Nearly 8,000, or 17 percent, of the injured cyclists were age 14 years or younger. There were 630 fatal bicycle accidents in 2009, accounting for 2 percent of all traffic fatalities. Seventy percent of all cycling fatalities in 2009 occurred in urban areas. Seventy-two percent of these fatalities occurred between the hours of 4 a.m. and 8 p.m. Keep in mind that these statistics are meant to highlight the most common and dangerous types of accidents. Always supervise your children when they ride, until they are old enough to safely ride alone…
