Here are some statistics from the NHTSA: Sixty-nine percent of all cycling fatalities occur in urban areas. Back To School Cycling Safety

With school returning this fall, millions of children across the country will be riding their bicycles to school. Cycling to school can be a healthy and fun alternative to riding the bus, but parents need to be aware of the dangers and ensure safety for their children. Of all traffic fatalities recorded in 2009, 630 were cyclists, representing 2 percent of all deaths. Seventeen percent of all cyclists injured in accidents in 2009 were age 14 or younger. Cyclist Killed in Accident During Organized Ride

An 18-year-old cyclist was killed in a bicycle accident on UCLA’s campus on August 28, according to sources. Reports indicate that cyclist Jerico Culata lost control and crashed into a wall during the Critical Mass ride. Critical Mass is an organized monthly ride that takes place in over 300 cities around the world. Witnesses say Culata was riding down a steep hill followed by a sharp turn when he lost control. Culata was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries. Two other cyclists were injured in unrelated crashes during the ride.
