San Francisco Cyclist Faces Felony Manslaughter Charge

A cyclist in San Francisco was charged with manslaughter after an accident last year in which he struck and killed a pedestrian, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Chris Bucchere, 36, is facing charges for the wrongful death of Sutchi Hui, the 71-year-old pedestrian. Hui was crossing an intersection inside of a crosswalk when he was struck by the cyclist. Hui died in the hospital four days later from head trauma. Prosecutors argued that Bucchere is an experienced cyclist and even teaches bicycle safety courses, although he reportedly violated bicycle safety laws in this incident. Three witnesses testified that Bucchere ran a red light and did not even slow down before the collision. “The fact that he is an experienced cyclist I find more worrisome,” says Assistant District Attorney Omid Talai. Furthermore, the collision was captured on video. If the case goes to trial, the surveillance footage is sure to…

San Diego Bicycle Accident Attorney Weighs In on Ghost Bikes

A monument erected at Boston University to honor the victim of a fatal bicycle accident has become known as the “ghost bike” because of its white color and what it stands for. Christopher Weigl was a 23-year-old graduate student at Boston University who was killed in a collision involving a commercial truck near campus on December 6. Monuments like this are used to mark the spots where a cyclist has been killed in a collision with a motorist. The ghost bikes first began to appear in St. Louis in 2003 following a bike accident, and there are currently over 500 around the world. “It could have been black, which would have been obvious, but white is sort of more honorific somehow,” said Eric Grunwald, an employee at Boston University. “It’s like a statement as much as a memorial, that something needs to be done. On both sides, I think, the…

A young man in San Antonio recently lost his father in a bicycle accident, and he is determined to make sure others do not have to go through the grief and hardship he has endured. James Shepard, 44, died in a bicycle accident just north of downtown San Antonio when he was struck by an SUV. James was riding home from work after dark. He was riding without a helmet, lights or reflectors on his bike. He was not riding in a bike lane. James’ son, Kyle Goff-Shepard, was heartbroken to learn the news. “It would be nice if everyone wore helmets, you know a lot of bicyclists do but I see people that don’t, and where dad’s wound was on his head, I honestly feel if he was wearing his helmet I feel this might have been a little different as well,” said Kyle. The police ruled the death…
