Supervisors Approve Study Into Bicycling Tube Over San Diego Bay

Since the 1980’s, Del Mar architect Lew Dominy has had a vision of runners and cyclists being able to cross the San Diego-Coronado Bridge in an enclosed tube suspended almost 200 feet over the water.  After several setbacks, Dominy is finally getting approval to study the project, thanks to a $75,000 grant approved by San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox and others. The money for the study comes from a $1 million fund that each supervisor uses to invest in the community, through what is known as Neighborhood Reinvestment Program grants. The study is meant to make sure that the almost 50-year-old bridge is structurally sound, and has enough seismic integrity to support the added weight of the walkway. San Diego’s Bike to Work Day Postponed Due to Wildfire

San Diego’s annual Bike to Work Day is a big deal. For the uninitiated, Bike to Work Day is a national event usually held on the third Friday in May, national bike month, in which commuters are encouraged to give the car a break and take two wheels to work Last year’s event included approximately 8,400 participants, a 16 percent increase from 2012. Furthermore, nearly 10,000 gallons of gas were saved. Bike to Work Day is a win-win for everyone; even those who do not participate enjoy the luxury of decreased traffic. Hopefully, Bike to Work Day will convince more motorists to support San Diego’s bike boom. Unfortunately, the Bike to Work Day previously scheduled for May 16 was postponed until May 30 due to the wildfire raging around San Diego.
