When Can San Diegans Expect The Bike Share Program To Take Off?

The San Diego bicycling community was looking forward to the upcoming installation of the bike share program. Originally, the program was slated to begin sometime between January and March. However, due to community outreach difficulties, launch of the program has been pushed out another two months. Program organizers assumed that the bike sharing stations would be located on city property where they have approval to install them. The reality is that many of the proposed stations are located in non-municipal areas, requiring organizers to get installation approval from the land owners.   Obtaining permission from local businesses and organizations “took a little longer than [organizers] expected it to take,” said the marketing manager for San Diego’s corporate partnerships. “But we did all of that, and we’re in very good shape.” The bike sharing program has been in the works since July of 2013 when the city partnered up with DecoBike,…

Where Can I Bike Safely In San Diego?

Road hazards are a leading cause of bicycle accidents in the San Diego area.  Many of the road hazards that cause road bicycle accidents are municipally owned, such as railroad tracks and manholes. As such it is often difficult to prove local government liability for bicycle accidents because even a fully functional manhole in good condition can be hazardous to a bicyclist. For the safety of young cyclists, municipal governments can set aside protected riding areas that are free from road hazards. A group of Carlsbad residents are lobbying local officials to set aside a safe zone for children to ride their bicycles without dangerous motor vehicles and road hazards. Bicyclists Protest East Elliot Trail Closure

A coalition of angry bicyclists gathered in mass at Mission Trails Regional Park in San Diego, California on Saturday, January 18 to protest the closure of many of the park’s bicycle trails. The cluster of trails located to the north of State Route 52, known as East Elliot, has questionable origins, according to Mission Trails Regional Park officials. The Deputy Director of San Diego’s Open Space Division stated, “We are not closing trails since the city has never officially opened and/or authorized the trails.” Park officials claim that the unauthorized construction of the East Elliot trails constitutes vandalism and “as with any other acts of vandalism in parks, the response is to restore the damaged assets.” In this instance, the damaged assets are the native vegetation.
