Bicycle Accident Risk in California: Elders and Children

Who is more at risk for bike accidents in California – children and teens, or the elderly? According to injury data collected from hospitals by the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, children and teens are getting into less bicycle accidents than they used to. However, for cyclists 55 years and older, injury rates are increasing. Additionally, compared with younger riders, seniors are more likely to suffer serious injuries that require hospitalization. Due to loss of bone mass and density resulting from aging, seniors are more likely to suffer fractures from the same trauma that a younger person would not necessarily suffer fractures from. Calls for Infrastructure Improvements After Pothole Hurts Cyclist

A Lemon Grove woman recently sustained serious injuries after hitting a pothole on her bicycle. She says she was riding her bike near Dartmoor Drive in late May as cars began to pass her. She looked backward to make sure she had a clear path, but did not anticipate the pothole in her path and flipped her bike. She chipped teeth and broke her ribs in the fall. It has been nearly a month since she was hurt and she says that the medical bills are piling up, not to mention the lost income from being out of work. The road where the accident happened sits right between the cities of San Diego and Lemon Grove, so she is not currently aware of which city might be…

Activists Express Concerns about San Diego Bicycle Programs

Bicycling has many benefits: health, traffic reduction and it’s better for the environment than most cars. San Diego is a great city for cycling, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have our shortcomings. Activists are pushing for quicker implementation of the city’s Bicycle Master Plan. The Bicycle Master Plan provides a framework for making cycling more practical and convenient for residents of San Diego. The plan was approved in 2013 and is intended to create an interconnected network of bike lanes throughout the city. It is a big part of the city’s plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Since the passage of the plan, 15 percent of proposed bike lane miles have been implemented and 22 percent of the existing network has been improved. The Bike Advisory Committee will soon start working with transportation engineers and the city to implement the plan faster. One of the reasons the plan is…
