Bay Area Cyclist Killed in Hit-and-Run

On May 15, a cyclist was killed in a hit-and-run car accident in the San Francisco area, according to Claude Wyle at InjuryBoard.com. Bo Hu, a 57-year-old cyclist from Dublin, California, was struck by a Mercedes-Benz while cycling on Dougherty Road. The driver proceeded to leave the scene of the accident. The alleged suspect is a San Francisco attorney, according to Dublin Police Lt. Herb Walters. Hu is a Chinese citizen who was visiting the Bay Area. A passerby called 911 and Hu was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect was arrested and identified as 32-year-old Spencer Freeman Smith of San Ramon, California. Investigators used debris from the scene to identify the car as a 2012 Mercedes-Benz and found other clues to identify Smith. There is never an excuse for fleeing the scene of an accident. California Distracted Driver Convicted for Killing Young Cyclist

A jury in California convicted a distracted driver for killing an 8-year-old boy on a bicycle, according to the Orange County Breeze. Anita Sue Cherry, 49, pleaded guilty to one count of reckless driving and was sentenced to three years of probation and 300 hours community service. Cherry struck the young cyclist on Shawnee Road in Westminster on the morning of January 19, 2011 in her Ford SUV. The young victim, AJ Brumback, was on his way to school. The defendant claimed she looked away from the road before striking the young boy at an intersection. Brumback, who had his bicycle helmet on, was tossed from his bike. Pennsylvania Passes Bicycle Buffer Zone Law

Lawmakers in Pennsylvania recently passed a bicycle safety law requiring motorists to give a 4-foot safety cushion when passing cyclists on the road. Governor Tom Corbett signed the new law on February 2, and it went into effect on April 2. On a two lane road, drivers are permitted to cross the center line to grant the cyclists the 4-foot cushion. If they cannot pass giving the 4-foot cushion, they must yield to the cyclist until they can pass safely. There is also wording in the new law that prohibits motorists from “cutting sharply” into a cyclists path while turning. “The differential in speed is the biggest safety challenge with motor vehicles and bicycles sharing our state’s roadways,” says Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Secretary Barry J.
