College Student Killed in Bicycle Collision

A female college student at St. Mary’s University in Indiana was killed in a bicycle collision, according to NBC News. According to reports, the victim was riding near campus, in the dark and the rain, when she collided with a car. The victim was identified as Ziqi Zhang, a 19-year-old student from China. Zhang was pronounced dead on the scene of the collision. The accident, which has shaken the small community, remains under investigation. Reports indicate that Zhang was riding without a helmet and was wearing dark clothing. “Our primary focus at this time is helping the students who are friends with her and the faculty members, very close to many of the faculty members here, helping them deal with this news and we have counselors available whenever they may need,” said Gwen O’Brien, St. Mary’s spokeswoman. Motorist Pleads Not Guilty in Fatal Hit-and-Run

A 19-year old man accused of fleeing the scene of a car accident pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of hit-and-run causing death, according to CBS 10 News in San Diego. Bail for Jim Hyuk Byun was set at $1 million, and he faces up to four years in prison if convicted. According to reports, Byun struck Angel Bojorquez, an 18-year-old grocery store clerk, as he was riding his bicycle home from work. Byun left Bojorquez to die on the side of the road, and he drove away and attempted to destroy some of the evidence on his truck from the bicycle accident. A neighbor of Byun’s noticed the damage to his truck and contacted the authorities. Hit-and-Run Claims Life of Cyclist, Beloved Professor

Steve Norwick, a popular Sonoma State University professor, lost his life in a tragic bicycle accident on June 8, according to JWeekly.com. Norwick was riding along a road when he was apparently hit by a motorist who fled the scene. Driver Robert Cowart plead not guilty to a felony hit-and-run charge. Norwick was in a coma for 10 days following the collision before he died at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. “It’s as if the fabric of our community has been torn apart,” said friend and colleague, Barbara Lesch McCaffry. “He touched hundreds of faculty and thousands of students.” Cowart, 68, has three previous convictions for drinking and driving. According to the prosecution, Cowart left the scene and proceeded on with his day as if nothing had happened before police caught him.
