Missionary Killed in Southern California Bicycle Accident

An October 10 bicycle accident in Azusa, California claimed the life of a Mormon missionary, according to Deseret News. Elder Andrew Edward Page, an 18-year-old missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, was hit by a vehicle while riding his bicycle. He was the second missionary to be killed in a personal injury accident within a two-day period, and one of more than 10 to die under such circumstances this year.

The 18-year-old missionary’s accident happened just after 4 p.m. on Newburgh Street. He was riding with a companion, and the companion reported that the accident happened while they were turning around after missing a turn. Page did not die on the scene, but his injuries did leave him in critical condition. He was transported by helicopter to a nearby trauma center, where he died around 10 p.m.

Page had been in his assigned mission less than a month, arriving in California about three weeks prior to the accident after spending six weeks in the Mexico City Missionary Training Center. Page’s death and the death of a fellow missionary the day before follow a statement released by the church in early September concerning the deaths of 10 missionaries from accident or illness over the course of this year.

“The death of a missionary is felt by every church member in a deep and personal way,” Elder David F. Evans, executive director of the church’s missionary department, said at that time.
