Duane Roth Day Declared in Honor of Bicycle Accident Victim

November 5 has been declared Duane Roth Day in San Diego in honor of the civic leader who died from injuries sustained in a July 21 bicycle accident. According to the La Jolla Patch, the City Council made the declaration to honor Roth, who a colleague called “a great San Diegan in every sense of the word.”

Todd Gloria, San Diego’s interim mayor, told the Patch that Roth was “an entrepreneur and collaborator who changed the way we lived and the way we worked.”

We first reported on this story on August 7. Roth, 63, had the accident while riding near Lake Cuyamaca, hitting a rock embankment as a result of the crash. The force of the collision was so severe that it broke Roth’s bicycle helmet.

After the accident, Roth was taken to UCSD Medical Center by helicopter and had to undergo surgery to relieve pressure on his brain by removing a piece of his skull. Following his surgery, Roth was placed in ICU in a medically induced coma. He died August 3 as a result of his injuries.

Although the accident claimed his life, Roth’s legacy will live on for generations to come.

“Duane’s work with Connect and Alliance Pharmaceuticals helped mold the landscape of our life sciences industry here in San Diego, obviously a big part of our economy,” Gloria said.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2011, bicycle accidents resulted in 38,000 injuries and 677 deaths.
