Bicyclists Protest East Elliot Trail Closure

A coalition of angry bicyclists gathered in mass at Mission Trails Regional Park in San Diego, California on Saturday, January 18 to protest the closure of many of the park’s bicycle trails. The cluster of trails located to the north of State Route 52, known as East Elliot, has questionable origins, according to Mission Trails Regional Park officials. The Deputy Director of San Diego’s Open Space Division stated, “We are not closing trails since the city has never officially opened and/or authorized the trails.” Park officials claim that the unauthorized construction of the East Elliot trails constitutes vandalism and “as with any other acts of vandalism in parks, the response is to restore the damaged assets.” In this instance, the damaged assets are the native vegetation. Single Mother Seriously Injured In San Diego Bicycle Accident

According to NBC San Diego, the individual responsible for seriously injuring a 38-year-old cyclist in October of 2013 was arrested and charged on Sunday, January 5. The 50-year-old motorist was traveling down SR-67 in a Dodge Ram 3500 on the morning of October 26, 2013, when he collided with another motorist in the stretch in which the road narrows from one to two lanes.  The 50-year-old motorist swerved into the bike lane in an attempt to cut off the other driver. In doing so, he struck a 38-year-old cyclist. According to court documents, the motorist was so enraged at the other driver that he neither saw nor felt the impact with the cyclist. The impact broke the victim’s neck and collar bone, resulting in a concussion. Months later, the victim is still in a limited mobility state of recovery. Bicycle Safety Question And Answer With San Diego Mayoral Candidates

The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition has published the transcript from a Q & A session between the Livable Streets Coalition, a conglomeration of non-profit organizations dedicated to urban planning, transportation and public safety and the current San Diego mayoral candidates, David Alvarez, Kevin Faulconer and Nathan Fletcher (no longer running). A representative of Livable Streets asked how downtown, which currently accommodates 30,000 residents, will accommodate the planned influx of 60,000 new residents while still remaining accessible, transportation-wise. Faulconer “want[s] to encourage walk-ability and smart growth,” such as “the Bayshore Bikeway.” As the city expands, pedestrian safety has grown into a large public concern.
