“Don’t Be A Jerk” Campaign to Feature Celebrities

The New York City Department of Transportation recently launched its “Don’t Be a Jerk” campaign to promote bicycle safety, according to MyFOXNY.com.  The campaign, accompanied by a video message, features celebrities in a humorous fashion. Some of the celebrities featured in the campaign video include Mario Batali, John Leguizamo and Paulina Porizkova.  The performers in the video urge both cyclists and pedestrians to obey rules and use caution as much as possible.  They remind cyclists to always yield to pedestrians, ride along with the direction of traffic and to ride on the street as opposed to the sidewalk. Commuter cycling in New York City has increased 262% from 2000 to 2010, according to the Department on Transportation, making bicycle safety more important than ever. “As our streets have become safer and as more New Yorkers take to two wheels, bike riders need to adopt a street code,” said Commissioner Sadik-Khan….

Southern California’s First Separated Bicycle Lanes Open in Long Beach

An inaugural ceremony was held on April 23 in Long Beach to celebrate the opening of bike lanes.  According to The Daily 49er—student publication of California State Long Beach—the new bike lanes will cover a three mile stretch downtown on Broadway and Third Street. The ceremony celebrated the increase in local bicycle safety and gave local cyclists a chance to mingle and enjoy an inaugural ride-along.  Among the group was Long Beach’s oldest cyclist, Octavio Orduño, who at 103 years old rides his tricycle around the streets near his Long Beach condominium. The new paths mark a milestone as they are the first separated bike lanes in Southern California. “Long Beach is setting the pace for other urban built-out cities with its willingness to prioritize cyclists and pedestrians,” Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal told a Daily 49er reporter. Bicyclist Killed in Tragic Head-On Collision

Travis Carroll, 39, died in a bicycle accident in Bermuda Dunes on April 14, according to BigBearGrizzly.net. Carroll was a Lake Patrol officer for the Big Bear Municipal Water District. Carroll was riding southeast on Highway 42 at the time of the bicycle accident.  Carroll collided head on with a van; the driver was Jack Woodward, 49, of Palm Desert. According to a California Highway Patrol officer, the van was traveling approximately 35 miles per hour. Paramedics immediately rushed Carroll to John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:17 p.m. Investigators have yet to determine the cause of the bicycle accident, though they did say that alcohol or drugs did not appear to be a factor. The accident ejected Carroll from his bike, and he was not wearing a bicycle helmet. Carroll served as Lake Patrol director for the Big Bear Municipal Water District and also…
