Are Bicycle Accidents a Growing Problem for California Cyclists?

Police in Santa Monica have launched an operation focused on preventing collisions between pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles. According to the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD), the operation will map out several areas where bicycle accidents have occurred over the last five years and what kinds of violations caused accidents. Over 870 bicycle accidents have been investigated by the SMPD in the last three years. Police will be looking for drivers who are speeding, making illegal turns, running through stop signs and committing other moving violations. California leads the nation in pedestrian and bicycle accident deaths, which is a reason why the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has given SMPD funds for this operation. Will Mandatory Helmet Laws Help in the Fight Against TBIs?

Research published in the Journal of Pediatrics found that injury rates were 20 percent lower in states that had helmet laws. How Will SB 192 Work? Existing…

Will Smartphones Make Cycling Safer and More Appealing?

Bicycle riding will be getting another technological update that can help the popular hobby become even safer. Software developers have created a smart-phone powered cockpit for bikes called “Cobi” – short for “connected bike”. Cobi uses a “hub” to connect to a cyclist’s smartphone, connected to the handlebars of the rider’s bike where it then handles a variety of tasks to help cyclists. The hub can charge a cyclists smartphone with a large built-in battery. Developers wanted to include a number of features that would enhance what the hobby of cycling is all about, so Cobi can run a number of apps via the smartphone. One feature includes a triggered light and sound alarm for anti-theft purposes. Cyclists can also use a scouting app that uses GPS to search for and set destinations, not unlike the GPS systems used by cars. In addition to anti-theft and directional applications, Cobi can…
