New Bike Path Opened In Oceanside

Bike commuters going from downtown to Oceanside have a new reason to celebrate: the new mile-long bike corridor connecting Oceanside Boulevard to Wisconsin Avenue is now open. Depositing riders where they can easily access the Oceanside Transit Center, the new bike path is opening up a host of new alternative transportation options for San Diego commuters that opt for two wheels instead of four. The Oceanside Corridor is one small step in a long-term process of reducing automobile traffic and emissions by expanding cycling infrastructure. “A lot of people want to be able to bike to the transit center,” said Oceanside Mayor Jim Wood. “We’re working to make the city more bicycle and pedestrian friendly.” “This [Oceanside bike] segment is just one part of a larger regional network,” said a representative of the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), a regional planning organization. “The link to the transit center is…

No Cars Allowed At CicloSDias 2014

San Diego Cyclists came out en masse on Sunday, March 30 for CicloSDias, a celebration of all things cycling. The event shut down a 2.5 mile stretch of the Pacific Beach area from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., during which no cars were permitted to enter. As such, the area was a bicycling free-for-all where families could enjoy the beautiful day on two wheels without worrying about the constant danger of an automobile. City Council President Todd Gloria, Congressman Scott Peters and Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman gave the event’s opening remarks in full cycling regalia, setting the tone for the day to come. “People want events like this,” said one CicloSDias attendee. “They want to be out in the streets without worrying about getting hit by a car or not being seen in the crosswalk or having a big enough bike lane.” Pedestrians are also welcome into the CicloSDias safe…

Joshua Bonnici Speaks At Bicycle Film Festival

Attorney Joshua Bonnici was recently invited to speak at the 13th annual Bicycle Film Festival in San Diego on Friday, February 28 and Saturday, March 1 in the North Park area. The festival was founded in 2001, when Brendt Barbur was riding his bike in New York City and was struck by a bus. Rather than let the accident breed resentment and bitterness about urban cycling, Barbur decided to turn his experience into an educational and celebratory event for everyone. By celebrating the bicycle through music, art and film, he could promote bicycle awareness and safety. In the thirteen years since Barbur’s accident, the festival has grown to international proportions, garnering the attention of media outlets around the world. According to Anthem Magazine, “[a]s the Festival grows, so too does awareness of bicycling as a legitimate (not to mention health) movement.” San Diego is a shining example of the growth…
