San Diego Cyclist Hit By Wrong-Way Driver Adjusts to Paralysis

In August 2014, avid cyclist Juan Carlos Viñolo was hit by a car traveling the wrong way on Fiesta Island. Viñolo’s shoulder smashed into the car’s windshield and his legs whipped over his head and onto the roof of the vehicle. He dislocated a clavicle, broke eight ribs and cut his hands. He lost a kidney, damaged his liver, lungs and spleen. His spine was severed, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. Recovering from a Traumatic Cycling Accident Today, nearly a year later, he’s adjusting to life as a paraplegic. His wife has been pushing him hard to adjust to his new life, and he’s received much support from the San Diego cycling community. Duane Roth Day Declared in Honor of Bicycle Accident Victim

November 5 has been declared Duane Roth Day in San Diego in honor of the civic leader who died from injuries sustained in a July 21 bicycle accident. According to the La Jolla Patch, the City Council made the declaration to honor Roth, who a colleague called “a great San Diegan in every sense of the word.” Todd Gloria, San Diego’s interim mayor, told the Patch that Roth was “an entrepreneur and collaborator who changed the way we lived and the way we worked.” We first reported on this story on August 7. Roth, 63, had the accident while riding near Lake Cuyamaca, hitting a rock embankment as a result of the crash. The force of the collision was so severe that it broke Roth’s bicycle helmet. Missionary Killed in Southern California Bicycle Accident

An October 10 bicycle accident in Azusa, California claimed the life of a Mormon missionary, according to Deseret News. Elder Andrew Edward Page, an 18-year-old missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, was hit by a vehicle while riding his bicycle. He was the second missionary to be killed in a personal injury accident within a two-day period, and one of more than 10 to die under such circumstances this year. The 18-year-old missionary’s accident happened just after 4 p.m. on Newburgh Street. He was riding with a companion, and the companion reported that the accident happened while they were turning around after missing a turn. Page did not die on the scene, but his injuries did leave him in critical condition.
