Bike Share Users Reluctant to Wear Helmets

Bike sharing programs–which allow cyclists to share a variety of bikes without purchasing them–are becoming increasingly popular across the country, particularly in urban areas. These programs are great for casual cyclists or those new to cycling. However, a recent study indicates that over 80% of those using these programs do not wear a bicycle helmet, according to MyHealthNewsDaily.com. This statistic is disturbing considering the magnitude of the risks associated with cycling without a helmet. “Head injury accounts for about a third of all bicycle injuries and about three-quarters of bicycle related deaths, so these are some pretty shocking numbers,” says Christopher Fischer of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, lead author of the study. The study focused on persons using bike share programs in Washington D.C. and Boston, where they are extremely popular. Fischer suspected that many cyclists did not use helmets, but not this many. “We were surprised to find…

San Diego Cyclist Struck by Car, Killed

A San Diego bicyclist died from injuries after an SUV hit him, according to NBC News in San Diego. The car struck the male cyclist on the morning of March 22 in Kearny Mesa, according to reports. A Ford Expedition initially struck David Ortiz, 29, and spun him into traffic, where he was hit by two other cars, and a third car eventually laid to rest on top of his body. The road does not have bicycle lanes. The cyclist wore a bicycle helmet that was destroyed in the bicycle accident. The California Highway Patrol responded to the accident and found Ortiz barely breathing. He died shortly after as a result of his injures. The San Diego Police Department is investigating the accident. They say his body was discovered on the shoulder, where he was supposed to be riding, but it is unclear if that is where he was initially…

New Bike Uses Brain Waves to Change Gears

When Toyota was developing its Prius hybrid vehicle, they hired a marketing firm, Deeplocal, to help with the campaign. Instead, Deeplocal developed a mind-controlled bike instead. Patrick Miller played a key part in the development of the bicycle, which debuts at the South by Southwest music, film and interactive festival in March in Austin, Texas. Miller designed a bicycle helmet that reads your brainwaves and transmits them to the bike’s gears. Parlee Cycles, a carbon-fiber racing bike manufacturer, built the frame. The rider wears a neuro-headset inside the helmet that reads his or her brain waves and detects signals. “That translates the signals into commands:  Shift up or shift down,” said Miller. “That then talks to a microcontroller insider here [pointing to a thick part of the bike’s frame] which I put a big antenna on, so hopefully there won’t be any communication issues. That then talks to the electronic…
