Safety Top Priority at Bicycle Summit in Florida

Legislators and officials from various federal agencies met in Florida for the Southeastern Bike Safety Summit at the Tampa Convention Center. Some of the most powerful figures in the transportation agencies put their minds together to think of new ways to make the roads safer for cyclists as well as motorists and pedestrians. The Tampa summit is the first of two conventions, with the second one held in Minneapolis on April 29. “This year we decided we really needed to step up our safety agenda when it comes to cycling,” said US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “Over the last several years the Federal Highway Administration has invested $3.9 billion in bicycle and pedestrian projects nationwide–$324 million coming to Florida.” LaHood hopes the new bicycle safety campaign will be as effective as the “Click It or Ticket” campaign launched in the 1980s and yielded successful results. 86 percent of drivers now…

New York Police Strike Cyclist, Send Him Bill

A police car in Brooklyn struck and injured 31-year-old cyclist Justin Johnsen last November, according to the New York Post. A 2009 Ford Taurus ran into Johnsen from behind as he was cycling to work on Flushing Avenue that morning, and the vehicle turned out to be an unmarked police car. I was kind of in disbelief that they were going to send this letter after four months or so and ask me to pay…

San Diego Injury Attorney Applauds Bakersfield City Council for Protecting Cyclists

Bakersfield has made its city streets and urban areas more accessible to cyclists and safer for all commuters. Bob Smith of the Bakersfield City Council recently highlighted the steps taken by the council and the Community Services Committee in a contribution to the Bakersfield Californian. Bike lanes will be added to roads, existing bike paths are slotted for re-pavement and “end-of-trip” facilities are going to be built. These facilities will have bike racks and will be well-lit areas near parking facilities. They will come equipped with water fountains, showers and lockers. “This is one of many steps the city is now taking in order to become a more bicycle-friendly city and thereby improve our quality of life,” Smith wrote. “These are the things that not only make life more pleasant for those of us already here, but have been shown to be an important consideration when people and businesses are…
