San Diego Bicycle Accident Attorney Reports that Grand Rapids Halts Cycling Legislation Changes Due to Bicycle Safety Concerns

Cyclists in Grand Rapids, Michigan are divided over proposed legislation that would require all bicyclists to stay off roads and sidewalks in areas where bike lanes are present. The idea was met with such opposition from cycling advocates that legislators decided to put it on hold. “Cyclists do have a legal right to be on the road,” said Barbara Schmid, chairwoman of the Greater Grand Rapids Bicycle Coalition. “This would be a step backward for all cyclists in the state. It’s probably a better idea to take a step back and really think it through. There’s so many nuances from a cyclist’s perspective that we have to be aware of.” There were many aspects of the new legislation, including a provision requiring cyclists to dismount and walk their bikes across crosswalks. Columnist Suggests Cyclists Ditch the Helmets

Everyone knows that in the event of a cycling accident, a helmet can prevent a traumatic brain injury and potentially save your life. However, a recent column in the New York Times questioned the longstanding belief that all cyclists should wear a bicycle helmet at all times. Elisabeth Rosenthal wrote an interesting piece about bike-sharing systems in other countries such as Australia and France, and how she rode without a helmet for the first time in 25 years. “In the United States, the notion that bike helmets promote health and safety by preventing head injuries is taken pretty near as God’s truth,” Rosenthal says. “Un-helmeted cyclists are regarded as irresponsible, like people who smoke. Cities are aggressive in helmet promotion. But many European health experts have taken a different view…if you force or pressure people to wear helmets, you discourage them from riding bicycles. That means more obesity, heart  disease…
