California Cyclists Opposed To Legislation that Restricts Their Use of Roads

San Francisco residents are reacting to new legislation that will place restrictions on the roads that bicyclists are allowed to use, according to San Francisco Streets Blog. The MAP-21 highway authorization bill is named the ‘bicycle safety’ bill , and it will prohibit cyclists from riding on federally owned roads with speed limits over 30 mph if there is a sidewalk within 100 yards of the road. Most cyclists in the city reacted negatively. The California Bicycle Coalition and a lobbying group called Bikeside are vocally opposed to the legislation and asked Senator Barbara Boxer to repeal it. California Governor Vetoes Bicycle Safety Bill, Aims To Improve It

California Governor Jerry Brown vetoed a bicycle safety bill earlier this month, claiming it would cause more accidents than it would prevent, according to The Los Angeles Times.  The proposed legislation required all motorists to give cyclists a 3-foot space while passing them and slow to 15 mph.  Governor Brown was concerned that the new law would lead to an increase in car accidents and put both motorists and cyclists at a greater risk. “On streets with speed limits of 35 to 40 mph, slowing to 15 mph to pass a bicycle could cause rear-end collisions,” said Governor Brown.  “On other roads, a bicycle may travel at or near 15 mph, creating a long line of cars behind the cyclist.” Governor Brown says he is willing to work on the bill so long as his concerns are addressed.  What do you think? Bicycle Accident Attorney Joshua Bonnici Pursues Bicycle Safety Education And Awareness

San Diego bicycle accident attorney Joshua Bonnici passed another milestone in his ongoing bicycle safety education.  Fred recently completed the Traffic Skills 201 safety course offered by the League of American Bicyclists. He completed hours of road cycling and successfully demonstrated proficiency avoiding road hazards and common bicycle accidents. This course included a written exam as well as a road course test. Fred previously passed the traffic skills 101 course. Fred also participated in a Children’s Safety Event in September, sponsored by Old Navy. Fred discussed bicycle safety laws with the kids, as well as proper bicycle helmet use. As an avid cyclist and bicycle accident attorney, Fred values bicycle safety greatly, and he will continue to educate himself and the public on its importance.
