Single Mother Seriously Injured In San Diego Bicycle Accident

According to NBC San Diego, the individual responsible for seriously injuring a 38-year-old cyclist in October of 2013 was arrested and charged on Sunday, January 5. The 50-year-old motorist was traveling down SR-67 in a Dodge Ram 3500 on the morning of October 26, 2013, when he collided with another motorist in the stretch in which the road narrows from one to two lanes.  The 50-year-old motorist swerved into the bike lane in an attempt to cut off the other driver. In doing so, he struck a 38-year-old cyclist. According to court documents, the motorist was so enraged at the other driver that he neither saw nor felt the impact with the cyclist. The impact broke the victim’s neck and collar bone, resulting in a concussion. Months later, the victim is still in a limited mobility state of recovery. Bicycle Safety Question And Answer With San Diego Mayoral Candidates

The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition has published the transcript from a Q & A session between the Livable Streets Coalition, a conglomeration of non-profit organizations dedicated to urban planning, transportation and public safety and the current San Diego mayoral candidates, David Alvarez, Kevin Faulconer and Nathan Fletcher (no longer running). A representative of Livable Streets asked how downtown, which currently accommodates 30,000 residents, will accommodate the planned influx of 60,000 new residents while still remaining accessible, transportation-wise. Faulconer “want[s] to encourage walk-ability and smart growth,” such as “the Bayshore Bikeway.” As the city expands, pedestrian safety has grown into a large public concern. San Diego Mayoral Candidates Focus On Bicycle Issues

San Diego mayoral candidates are making improved bicycle infrastructure and safety a top priority. Former candidate for mayor, Nathan Fletcher, took to the streets to investigate potential for improving the city’s bicycle infrastructure. Though the details of the proposed plan remain ambiguous, the San Diego Association of Governments has upwards of $54 million allocated for road improvement. Much of those could be spent optimizing commuter bicycle routes. Fletcher claims that “investing in bicycle infrastructure makes economic sense as a cost-effective way to support business, enhance our quality of life and support tourism…The return on investment in bike infrastructure has been realized by other cities. For instance, in 2008, Portland generated $90 million in bicycle-related economic activity, from retail, manufacturing, professional services and organized rides.” The general election did not turn out in Fletcher’s favor.
