California City Spending $2.7 Million To Improve Pedestrian And Cyclists Safety

San Carlos in California is planning to spend $2.7 million to extend safety measures to bicyclists and pedestrians, according to MercuryNews.com. The project is focusing on the city’s east side and will widen and add sidewalks, bicycle lanes, street lamps, parking spaces and trees with planters. “It will improve the physical look of the neighborhood and make it easier for everyone to get around, whether bicyclists, pedestrians or vehicular traffic,” City Planning Manager Deborah Nelson said. Some local restaurants were concerned about losing parking spots for patrons and the project, which has been dubbed the “East Side Connect Project,” could hurt their business. “The challenge is to meet everyone’s needs,” Nelson said. This is certainly a step in the right direction and will improve the entire community.  Bicycle lanes and proper lighting can prevent a bicycle accident and quite possibly even save lives.
