Gather Your Torches! Daylight Savings Ends and California Nighttime Cycling Laws

Daylight savings time will be coming to an end soon. Remember to reset your clocks on November 1 and prepare for an earlier sunset. It’s also a decent time for a quick refresher on California nighttime cycling laws as many of us will be riding in the dark soon. California law requires that any cyclist riding after sunset be on a bike that is equipped with the following: A lamp emitting a white light that, while the bicycle is in motion, illuminates the highway, sidewalk, or bikeway in front of the bicyclist and is visible from a distance of 300 feet in front and from the sides of the bicycle. Welcome to the Danger Zone: Dangerous San Diego Roads for Cyclists

Veteran and casual cyclists alike are at risk 100 percent of the time, but there are some places that are more dangerous than others. Thanks to an article published in the San Diego Reader, we have a list of streets that San Diego cyclists deem more treacherous than others. These dangerous San Diego roads listed below are best to be avoided completely when possible. Friars Road from Morena Blvd. to Qualcomm Way – Cyclists that have taken this route have complained that the designated bike routes cross with merging on-ramp car lanes that have drivers coming through the bike lane. Also, the bike lanes do little to protect riders from cars whizzing by at 50 plus on both sides. Tips for Safer Pedaling Through the Streets of San Diego

Bicycle safety is extremely important for a community like San Diego, which are known for having a high population of cyclists. Whether you are a fair weather rider or a daily cyclist, a little extra bike safety knowledge can keep you out of harm’s way. Avoid riding during rush hour- Almost 70 percent of all bicycle accidents in San Diego occur between the hours of 4pm and 8pm. Avoid University Avenue- a study by Circulate San Diego released a study that showed that about 30 percent of bike accidents happened on the same eight roads, and that University Avenue was the most dangerous. Streets like University Ave. that have wide lanes, parked cars on the side, and no bike lanes are considerably more dangerous than other streets. Use streets with bike lanes- Studies have shown that streets with designated bike lanes reduce the risk of being hit by 50 percent….
