Cyclists Ride West Coast for a Good Cause

A group of 27 cyclists are riding along the Pacific Coast to raise money and awareness for the Fuller Center for Housing, a Georgia-based nonprofit that builds homes for the poor. The ride began in Seattle on July 15 and finishes in San Diego, where the cyclists will repair two houses in Oceanside. “I’ve been on two [bike rides], east coast and west coast,” says participant Carmen Price, 20, from Tennessee. “This has the scenery. Bicycle Safety for Children

This is a great educational video for young cyclists from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Before getting on their first bike, children must understand the importance following bicycle safety laws. Keep some of these statistics in mind when teaching your children about bicycle safety: Approximately 51,000 cyclists were injured in collisions with a motor vehicle in 2009. Seventy percent of all cycling fatalities in 2009 occurred in urban areas. Seventy-two percent of these fatalities occurred between the hours of 4 a.m. and 8 p.m. Keep in mind that these statistics are meant to highlight the most common and dangerous types of accidents. Always supervise your children when they ride, until they are old enough to safely ride alone…

Mid-Summer Cycling Safety Tips

This video from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) offers some great safety tips for cyclists. Many of these tips may seem like common sense, but you would be amazed at the number of cyclists who are unaware of bicycle safety laws. Keep the tips from the NHTSA in mind, as well as the following: Watch your back. Remember to scan the road behind you for passing vehicles or other cyclists. More and more electric-powered vehicles are on the road, which are difficult to hear. If you bike on roads often, a rearview mirror for your bike could be a good investment. Stay straight. When riding on the road, keep your path as straight as possible. The more predictable you are, the less likely you are to be hit by a car. Be aware of road hazards. A large number of things can cause you to wreck your…
