Cyclist Continues Recovery After Traumatic Brain Injury

North Carolina cyclist Ibrahim Myers continues his path to recovery from a traumatic bicycle accident in June of 2011, according to the Winston-Salem Journal. Myers, 36, suffered severe brain injuries after colliding with a van. Myers was not wearing a bicycle helmet. Myers remains in a rehabilitation facility at Oak Forest Health and Rehabilitation in Winston-Salem. It may be a while—if ever—before he returns to cycling, but the fact that he is alive is a miracle in itself. He has lost the majority of his motor skills. “He looked at mom out of the blue and did the ‘I love you’ sign with his hand,” said his brother, Michael Myers. Myers, leaving his shift as a deliveryman for a downtown sub shop, collided with the van shortly before 11 p.m. His family did not expect him to survive. “In June, there wasn’t any sign that he was going to pull…

Tennessee Cyclist Critically Injured In Accident

A Tennessee cyclist suffered serious injuries after a bicycle accident when a vehicle struck him, according to DNJ.com. Witness Cole Elliot could hear the collision and knew exactly what happened before even looking. The name of the cyclist was not available, and his injuries are “severe.” “I was scared to look back,” said Elliot. “The man on the bicycle wasn’t moving. I ran inside to get my boss. He ran out there and tried to save the man’s life.” Elliot’s boss, Gary Fisher, attempted to treat the cyclist when he noticed witnesses just standing around. “I pushed everyone out of the way and gave him compressions,” says Fisher. “He had multiple fractures, and was bleeding from his nose and mouth. I was kind of sick to my stomach, but I didn’t want to stop what I was doing.” Paramedics arrived and rushed the victim to the hospital before he was…

Helmets Are Only the Beginning

Are helmets the answer? Helmets may be the most well known aspect of safe cycling, but some argue that wearing a bicycle helmet is only one step toward cycling safely and preventing injury in a bicycle accident. Many argue that while helmets may help to prevent some injuries, they keep riders far less safe than a basic knowledge of bicycle and road safety would. After all, helmets can do nothing to prevent accidents. Helmets have become the easiest, most visible way to promote safe cycling, but that is just the beginning. Statistics also show that since helmets became widespread, the rates of head injury have been on the rise. Granted, the spike in bicycle related casualties does not account for the much higher number of people who now cycle for transportation, often on busy city roads. Among those who cycle safely, experts agree that helmet usage can help prevent serious…
