Arizona City Hazardous for Cyclists

The city of Payson, Arizona is particularly dangerous for bicyclists. According to the Payson Roundup, the bicycle accident rate for bike-motor vehicle crashes is five times above the national average. Typically the motorist is at fault in these accidents, but residents in Payson claim that cyclists often fail to yield to traffic. Chief Don Engler claims he has received many calls lately from motorists about cyclists pulling out into traffic without even looking. He says there have been countless calls about narrowly avoided collisions. “I have had quite a few comments from citizens and volunteers on patrol who say bicyclists are failing to yield at stop signs,” he says. “Bikers need to review the law.” The law in Arizona holds bicyclists to the same standards on the road as motorists. Cyclist Continues Recovery After Traumatic Brain Injury

North Carolina cyclist Ibrahim Myers continues his path to recovery from a traumatic bicycle accident in June of 2011, according to the Winston-Salem Journal. Myers, 36, suffered severe brain injuries after colliding with a van. Myers was not wearing a bicycle helmet. He has lost the majority of his motor skills. “He looked at mom out of the blue and did the ‘I love you’ sign with his hand,” said his brother, Michael Myers. Myers, leaving his shift as a deliveryman for a downtown sub shop, collided with the van shortly before 11 p.m. His family did not expect him to survive. “In June, there wasn’t any sign that he was going to pull…

Tennessee Cyclist Critically Injured In Accident

A Tennessee cyclist suffered serious injuries after a bicycle accident when a vehicle struck him, according to DNJ.com. Witness Cole Elliot could hear the collision and knew exactly what happened before even looking. The name of the cyclist was not available, and his injuries are “severe.” “I was scared to look back,” said Elliot. “The man on the bicycle wasn’t moving. I ran inside to get my boss. He ran out there and tried to save the man’s life.” Elliot’s boss, Gary Fisher, attempted to treat the cyclist when he noticed witnesses just standing around. “I pushed everyone out of the way and gave him compressions,” says Fisher. “He had multiple fractures, and was bleeding from his nose and mouth. I was kind of sick to my stomach, but I didn’t want to stop what I was doing.” Paramedics arrived and rushed the victim to the hospital before he was…
