Columnist Suggests Cyclists Ditch the Helmets

Everyone knows that in the event of a cycling accident, a helmet can prevent a traumatic brain injury and potentially save your life. However, a recent column in the New York Times questioned the longstanding belief that all cyclists should wear a bicycle helmet at all times. Elisabeth Rosenthal wrote an interesting piece about bike-sharing systems in other countries such as Australia and France, and how she rode without a helmet for the first time in 25 years. “In the United States, the notion that bike helmets promote health and safety by preventing head injuries is taken pretty near as God’s truth,” Rosenthal says. “Un-helmeted cyclists are regarded as irresponsible, like people who smoke. New Product Provides Cyclists with Bike Lane

Riding at night and riding on roads without bicycle lanes are some of the greatest dangers facing cyclists. A new product may help to eliminate some of the risk, however. The new product, called Xfire Safety, illuminates a personal bike lane on the road or pathway for the cyclist. Xfire uses lasers mounted on the bike to display lanes on each side of the cyclist, visible to motorists, pedestrians and other cyclists even under headlamps and streetlights. The device uses two 5-milliwatt red lasers to project the lane, powered by two AAA batteries and retails for $39.99. It also serves as a standard tail light. As the cycling community grows across the nation, it is more important than ever that everyone is aware of bicycle safety laws. This video from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is full of valuable information and tips for new and experienced riders alike. Safety should be the top priority for all cyclists, so if you have children, be sure to teach them safe habits from a young age. Here are some statistics from the NHTSA: Sixty-nine percent of all cycling fatalities occur in urban areas.
