New York State Speaker Injured In Bicycle Accident

Speaker of the New York State Assembly Sheldon Silver is in a Connecticut hospital after a bicycle accident on November 10, according to sources. Silver suffered a knee injury after striking a pothole. He will remain in the hospital following treatment. “Due to an injury sustained during a bicycle accident on November 10, Speaker Silver was admitted to Stamford Hospital…on Sunday to undergo treatments to address the swelling in his knee,” said spokesman Michael Whyland. “These are minor procedures which are expected to conclude on Tuesday.” Cyclists need to be careful and aware the road conditions wherever they are riding. It is unclear why the pothole was not addressed or if Silver was on a road or a bike path, but regardless, it is always better to be safe than sorry. California Cyclists Opposed To Legislation that Restricts Their Use of Roads

San Francisco residents are reacting to new legislation that will place restrictions on the roads that bicyclists are allowed to use, according to San Francisco Streets Blog. Indiana Girl Killed In Cycling Accident

A 15-year-old girl in Indiana died in a tragic bicycle accident on November 6, according to Fox 28 News in South Bend.  Elkhart County Sherriff’s Department identified the girl as Amanda Zimmerman. Amanda was riding on rural Country Road 40 when an SUV struck her.  She was rushed to a South Bend hospital, where she died from her injuries.  She suffered blunt force trauma and reportedly was not wearing a bicycle helmet. The accident remains under investigation, but no citations were issued.  The driver, Gregory Yoder, 39, told police he did not see the cyclist.  Police do not believe alcohol was a factor in the accident. While it is not fair to jump to conclusions before the investigation is complete, cyclists must remember to wear a helmet and be visible in the dark and to follow bicycle safety laws at all times.
