City Leaders Unveil San Diego Bike Loop

San Diego cyclists have a brand new way to see the sights thanks to a new bike path, introduced in the interests of helping San Diego become a “world-class bike city”. City leaders have announced the completion of the San Diego Bike Loop, a circular route designed to lead bicycling enthusiasts on a picturesque tour of the area’s top attractions.

The 7.3-mile route leads riders through well-known San Diego landmarks like Balboa Park, the Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy and Seaport Village. Recreational and professional riders alike can use the path to visit popular destinations like Petco Park, the USS Midway Museum and San Diego Bay as well.

Much of the route is designated by navigation symbols called “sharrows,” a set of arrows indicating a shared lane for both bikes and cars. Parts of the route also include a dedicated bike lane, like the stretch in Bankers Hill along 4th and 5th Avenues.

Several “active commuters” say that protected bike lanes make them feel safer, and make them more comfortable using bikes to get to their final destination.

“Our streets are a key part of our public infrastructure. They are not just for cars. They are for people… providing safe bikeways is a smart investment,” says City Council President Todd Gloria.

The new attraction was unveiled on May 28, right before San Diego’s Bike to Work Day the following Friday. Gloria said he hopes that the new trail will encourage riders to use their bikes not only for recreation, “but really [make bicycles] a true transportation option.”
