Mid-Summer Cycling Safety Tips

This video from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) offers some great safety tips for cyclists. Many of these tips may seem like common sense, but you would be amazed at the number of cyclists who are unaware of bicycle safety laws. Keep the tips from the NHTSA in mind, as well as the following:

  • Watch your back. Remember to scan the road behind you for passing vehicles or other cyclists. More and more electric-powered vehicles are on the road, which are difficult to hear. If you bike on roads often, a rearview mirror for your bike could be a good investment.
  • Stay straight. When riding on the road, keep your path as straight as possible. The more predictable you are, the less likely you are to be hit by a car.
  • Be aware of road hazards. A large number of things can cause you to wreck your bike, including rocks, sewer grates, uneven pavement and debris in the road. You should ride with a pair of sunglasses if you ride during the day to ensure visibility.
