National Recall Issued for Defective Bicycle Helmets

According to AllHeadlineNews.com, thousands of bicycle helmets were recalled recently due to a faulty chinstrap.  The defective bicycle helmets were all in North America and were manufactured by Bell Sports, a California company. One of the reports that Bell Sports received was about a cyclist who was injured in a bicycle accident and the bicycle helmet failed, requiring the cyclist to be treated for injuries and receive stitches below his eye.  The defective bicycle helmet is intended to be a full-face helmet that is intended for younger cyclists. Approximately 31,000 helmets were sold in the United States and an additional 2,500 in Canada.  The defective bicycle helmets were sold on Amazon.com and in Wal-Mart.  In an attempt to increase national bicycle safety, Bell is offering a replacement of refund for customers of the defective bicycle helmet.

Two San Diego Cyclists Injured in Separate Accidents

According to SignOnSanDiego.com, two separate San Diego area bicycle accidents lest two different cyclists with recovering from a personal injury on Friday, May 20th. Bryan Caraveo, 48, of Santee, was struck by a dump truck whole riding his bicycle on Mission George Road in San Carlos, according to Lt. Andra Brown of the San Diego Police Department.  The accident occurred early in the morning, just before 7 am.  Caraveo was wearing a bicycle helmet and riding in the bike lane according to investigators. Caraveo was hit by a dump truck owned by Pave Pros, a paving contracting company, as it was turning into a parking lot.  According to his son, Caraveo suffered 15 broken rips.  Police do not expect charges to be filed at this point. Monument at Sacramento State Serves as Reminder for Cyclists

A monument has been erected in Sacramento to serve as a reminder to drivers and cyclists of the death of a young cyclist who was killed while riding her bike, according to 3 KCRA News in Sacramento.  The monument is a “ghost bike” and was placed near the Sacramento State campus. May has been designated as bicycle safety month and advocates are hoping this reminder will be effective for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. A 22-year-old woman was killed near the site of the new monument while riding her bike on April 1.  According to Sacramento police, she was not wearing reflective clothing.  On April 10, a 17-year-old gilr was hit by two vehicles in Land Park, not far from Sacramento State.  She survived the accident, but police said she was very lucky to be alive because she was not wearing a bicycle helmet.
