California Governor Vetoes Bicycle Safety Bill, Aims To Improve It

California Governor Jerry Brown vetoed a bicycle safety bill earlier this month, claiming it would cause more accidents than it would prevent, according to The Los Angeles Times.  The proposed legislation required all motorists to give cyclists a 3-foot space while passing them and slow to 15 mph.  Governor Brown was concerned that the new law would lead to an increase in car accidents and put both motorists and cyclists at a greater risk. “On streets with speed limits of 35 to 40 mph, slowing to 15 mph to pass a bicycle could cause rear-end collisions,” said Governor Brown.  “On other roads, a bicycle may travel at or near 15 mph, creating a long line of cars behind the cyclist.” Governor Brown says he is willing to work on the bill so long as his concerns are addressed.  What do you think? Bicycle Helmet Saves Life Of 4-Year-Old Boy

A 4-year-old boy in Urbandale, Iowa is lucky to be alive after a car hit him while he was riding his bicycle, according to the Chicago Tribune.  Apparently, a toddler who was playing inside the vehicle knocked the transmission into neutral, causing the car to roll and hit the 4-year-old.  The car rolled into a 7-year-old as well, before rolling over the 4-year-old boy’s head. His bicycle helmet saved his life.  Both of the children who were hit went to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.  This is far from your common bicycle accident, but it still a great example of a bicycle helmet saving a young life.  If you start practicing bicycle safety from a young age, children will become used to wearing a helmet and make it a habit. University Of Arizona Raises Awareness Of Bicycle Safety Laws

As students are shuffling back into class on campus this fall, the University of Arizona is focusing on raising awareness of bicycle laws and other traffic laws.  The University of Arizona Police Department and Parking and Transportation Services has launched a Bicycle Safety and Education Campaign to ensure safety for students and faculty this years. Officers will issue warnings to anyone not obeying the laws.  Their goal is to educate, not simply punish and fine.   When the campaign is over in October, officers will issue citations instead of warnings. “Bikes have to follow the same laws as a car, like stopping at red lights,” Sgt. Juan Alvarez told The Daily Wildcat, University of Arizona’s newspaper. “I would follow more laws if I actually knew them,” said freshman Nick DePratti.  “I guess I break the bike laws without knowing.” Officers will pass out brochures to violators during the beginning, informing them…
