Cycling Advocate Calling For More Los Angeles Checkpoints

Los Angeles cycling advocate Alex de Cordoba is thankful to be alive after a bicycle accident nearly claimed his life in November. The hit-and-run accident left him with life-threatening injuries, and now he is calling for action to improve bicycle safety in Los Angeles. In a Huffington Post column, de Cordoba said he began to notice drivers’ license checkpoints in the city after the accident. The checkpoints are similar to DUI checkpoints and are meant to weed out drivers with suspended licenses or no license at all. “An estimated two million drivers are unlicensed,” says de Cordoba. “Either they never got a driver’s license, or their license has been suspended. More than half of all people driving with a suspended license were convicted of a DUI. Half of all hit-at-run collisions involve unlicensed drivers. Unlicensed drivers are four times more likely to be involved in a fatal accident.” Do you…

California Cyclists Opposed To Legislation that Restricts Their Use of Roads

San Francisco residents are reacting to new legislation that will place restrictions on the roads that bicyclists are allowed to use, according to San Francisco Streets Blog. The MAP-21 highway authorization bill is named the ‘bicycle safety’ bill , and it will prohibit cyclists from riding on federally owned roads with speed limits over 30 mph if there is a sidewalk within 100 yards of the road. Most cyclists in the city reacted negatively. The California Bicycle Coalition and a lobbying group called Bikeside are vocally opposed to the legislation and asked Senator Barbara Boxer to repeal it. A petition is currently making the rounds in San Francisco. “The provision requires no minimum standard of safety or mobility on the side path, and experience shows that such paths are often more dangerous or impractical than on-road bicycling,” said David Snyder of the California Bicycle Coalition. “The provision may have been…

Long Beach Researches How To Allocate Funding For Bicycle And Pedestrian Safety

Long Beach city officials are conducting their fourth annual bicycle and pedestrian count for research purposes, according to the Daily 49er.  The purpose of the count and survey is to let the city know where they could improve and allocate resources for pedestrian and bicycle safety. The Los Angeles Country Department of Public Health is asking 300 students and volunteers to conduct the counts in 35 strategically determined locations. “Students are motivated to be a part of positive change in a city where the university is, especially students who have struggled with finding bike routes to campus and want to be part of the solution,” said program coordinator Elissa Thomas. It is refreshing to see a community not only allocate funds for bicycle safety, but to take the time to make sure they are spending the money wisely.  Wouldn’t you like to see this sort of action taken in your…
