San Francisco Man Giving Cyclists and City Planners Headaches

Most everyone would agree that there are many health benefits to cycling, in fact, it is one of the main reasons people choose to cycle instead of drive or use public transportation. One man in San Francisco, however, may not agree. At least he claims he does not. Rob Anderson, 69, is using a state legal loophole to stall the development of 1,600 miles of bike lanes in California, according to SmartPlanet.com. Anderson successfully sued San Francisco in 2006 for failing to properly conduct environmental studies before making bike lanes. The studies are required by state law. It stalled the project for three years. Cyclist Receives $6 Million Settlement after Accident

An unnamed corporation has agreed to a lawsuit settlement with a 32-year-old man who was injured in a bicycle accident in November of 2009, according to the OC Weekly. The accident occurred at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana when an airport shuttle struck the cyclist. The name of the defendant and the plaintiff are both kept confidential due to terms of the settlement, according to John Wayne Airport. According to reports, “a large multi-national corporation” agreed to pay the plaintiff $6 million in damages. The night of the accident, the shuttle pulled up to the airport exit and stopped. As it was pulling back onto the roadway, it hit the passing cyclist and rolled over him, fracturing his pelvis and damaging internal organs. Police Search for Motorist Who Struck Young Cyclist

A motorist critically injured a 13-year-old girl after striking her in a hit-and-run collision on February 6, according to the Los Angeles Times. The girl was riding her bike in Santa Ana on Greenville Street when the car struck her and then took off, according to police reports. She is in the hospital, but doctors expect her to survive. “The driver fled the scene, making no attempt to stop or check on the condition of the injured girl,” says Santa Ana Police Officer Anthony Bertagna. Several other motorists stopped to assist the young girl and called an ambulance. A potential witness, identified as a Latino man driving a black Chevrolet Suburban, left the scene as police arrived. Police are attempting to locate the man. There are no other witnesses and no vehicle description for the car who struck the cyclist.
