New York Cyclist Killed After Hitting Mail Truck

A 63-year-old cyclist in New York died from injuries sustained in a bicycle accident, according to the Wall Street Journal. Kenneth Phelps of Malta, New York collided with a parked mail truck on December 20. He suffered major injuries and was airlifted to Saratoga Hospital. The mail truck, driven by Paul Evers, was parked and had its flashers on, according to police reports. Investigators are considering all possibilities—maybe he was distracted, couldn’t see the truck or had a medical condition that caused him to wreck. No citations were issued. The accident left a large dent on the back of the truck. Witnesses say that just prior to the accident Phelps had his head down. “I heard the noise inside,” said one witness. “It sounded like a huge collision.” All the experience and safety equipment in the world does not make a difference for a cyclist who does not ride carefully….

Make Sure Your Gift Is ‘Complete’ This Year

San Diego health officials are reminding those giving or donating gifts to children to keep safety in mind. If you plan on donating—or giving in general—a bicycle, skateboard or a scooter, remember to include a helmet as well. If a child receives a gift, they may not want to wait for all the safety equipment before testing it out. Officials want to make sure that all the gifts this year are “complete,” according to KBPS.org. “During the past year, 222 children under the age of 15 were injured riding their bikes, scooter or skateboards in San Diego County,” said Dr. Wilma Wooten, county public health officer. “It’s estimated that wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of severe brain injuries by approximately 85 to 90 percent.” Make sure the helmet is appropriate for the gift as well, and will fit the recipient. It can make a huge difference in how…

Southern California Promotes Cycling With Bike Garages

Los Angeles is now offering parking garages exclusively for bicycles, according to BikeRadar.com. The storage garages for cyclists commuting in the city for work, shopping or dining first popped up in Burbank and Santa Monica. The garage in Burbank is referred to as the “Bike Stop” and offers 40 secure parking stalls and even a repair stand for cyclists. Officials are hopeful the facilities will encourage people to cycle and use public transportation as an alternative to driving. It is located right next to the Burbank Metrolink station. The Bicycle Transportation Account helped with funding for the project, and they bike stops are anticipating another $7.2 million in funding for future projects. “The number of projects awarded to provide bike racks, bike parking garages and/or bicycle lockers has remained fairly constant at two to three a year,” said program manager Penny Gray. “These types of projects do encourage bicycling to…
