While it is true that cycling is still relatively safer than it was 30 years ago, America has seen a large spike in the number of injuries and fatalities among riders. Just like when New Year’s Day rolls around, it’s time to make some resolutions. Setting Yourself New Cycling Goals As with anything you do, the aim should be to improve yourself. What better way to do that than to set yourself some new goals? Push Farther – Whatever distance you are riding each day, week, month, or whatever, try to push yourself to go farther. The Los Angeles Times recently ran a story about the Laemmle Charitable Foundation’s Operation Firefly, which is designed to educate cyclists on how to bicycle safely at night. Operation Firefly, which occurs annually from November to March, sets up pop up events at night throughout Los Angeles, where volunteers provide bike lights and information concerning nighttime bicycling safety to area cyclists. What Do I Need to Do to Ride My Bicycle Safely at Night? According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data gathered in 2013, 56 percent of fatal bicycle accidents in the US that year occurred sometime between 3 p.m. and 12 a.m. Honestly, it is just logic.
