San Diego Bicycle Accident Attorney Reports that Grand Rapids Halts Cycling Legislation Changes Due to Bicycle Safety Concerns

Cyclists in Grand Rapids, Michigan are divided over proposed legislation that would require all bicyclists to stay off roads and sidewalks in areas where bike lanes are present. The idea was met with such opposition from cycling advocates that legislators decided to put it on hold. “Cyclists do have a legal right to be on the road,” said Barbara Schmid, chairwoman of the Greater Grand Rapids Bicycle Coalition. “This would be a step backward for all cyclists in the state. It’s probably a better idea to take a step back and really think it through. Cyclist Killed After Becoming Pinned Beneath Truck

A cyclist in Corona Del Mar was killed after she was pinned beneath a truck making a right hand turn, according to sources. Sarah Leaf, 29, lost control of her bicycle and fell between the tires of a truck. The truck driver did not notice and proceeded to drive away, crushing Leaf. There has been an outcry from the local cycling community after charges were not filed against the driver. “It was a very, very unfortunate accident,” said Newport Beach Police Chief Jay Johnson. “I caution you to keep that in mind. I think the natural reaction is to go on the offensive. We look for facts and what do the facts show us. There’s a lot of misinformation out there—a lot of misinformation.” According to Deputy Chief David McGill, the truck was behind two other cars waiting to turn right. There was no bike lane on the road. “The…

Cycling Community Rallies in Support of Accident Victim

A large group of cyclists in San Antonio, Texas gathered for an organized ride to benefit bicycle accident victim Monica Caban, according to MySanAntonio.com. Caban, 39, was struck from behind by a car while riding on October 20. The crash left her paralyzed from the waist down, and doctors have said they are doubtful she will ever walk again. Caban, a mother of two, was hit while riding along Interstate 10 with a friend, training for the Ironman in Arizona in November. Caban completed the Florida Ironman last year. Caban was hit by a truck and flung 30 feet. The impact immediately severed her spine. The San Antonio cycling community rallied in support of Caban, as well as to take a stand against inconsiderate motorists. Since 2009, there have been 10 fatal bicycle accidents in San Antonio involving cars. “It’s scary when you ride out here,” says  Don Losole, ride…
