Injured Iowa Cyclist Receives $1.2 Settlement

A bicycle accident victim received a $1.2 million settlement from the city of Coralville, Iowa, as well as the state, according to the Iowa City Press Citizen. Bridgid Ruden lost control of her bicycle on May 24, 2008 as she was riding on the North Ridge Trail on the University of Iowa’s Oakdale campus. San Francisco Cyclist Faces Felony Manslaughter Charge

A cyclist in San Francisco was charged with manslaughter after an accident last year in which he struck and killed a pedestrian, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Chris Bucchere, 36, is facing charges for the wrongful death of Sutchi Hui, the 71-year-old pedestrian. Hui was crossing an intersection inside of a crosswalk when he was struck by the cyclist. Hui died in the hospital four days later from head trauma. Prosecutors argued that Bucchere is an experienced cyclist and even teaches bicycle safety courses, although he reportedly violated bicycle safety laws in this incident. Three witnesses testified that Bucchere ran a red light and did not even slow down before the collision. “The fact that he is an experienced cyclist I find more worrisome,” says Assistant District Attorney Omid Talai. Furthermore, the collision was captured on video. If the case goes to trial, the surveillance footage is sure to…
