Columnist Suggests Cyclists Ditch the Helmets

Everyone knows that in the event of a cycling accident, a helmet can prevent a traumatic brain injury and potentially save your life. However, a recent column in the New York Times questioned the longstanding belief that all cyclists should wear a bicycle helmet at all times. Elisabeth Rosenthal wrote an interesting piece about bike-sharing systems in other countries such as Australia and France, and how she rode without a helmet for the first time in 25 years. “In the United States, the notion that bike helmets promote health and safety by preventing head injuries is taken pretty near as God’s truth,” Rosenthal says. “Un-helmeted cyclists are regarded as irresponsible, like people who smoke. Cities are aggressive in helmet promotion. But many European health experts have taken a different view…if you force or pressure people to wear helmets, you discourage them from riding bicycles. NBC Expands Facility; Contributes to Bike Path

NBCUniversal received approval from the Los Angeles City Planning Commission to expand its San Fernando Valley facility, which interferes with the much-anticipated bike path along the L.A. River, according to the Los Angeles Times. NBC agreed to make modifications to accommodate the bike path. The bike path was finally approved by the city at the request of the city’s cyclists and environmentalists. “I’m excited that NBC has stepped up to the plate with real dollars,” says Eric Bruins of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition. It is great that NBC is taking the cycling community into consideration while expanding its facilities. The L.A. bike path overhaul was an enormous accomplishment for the cycling community, and a setback would be a devastating blow. “We are very pleased at the outcome of today,” says Corinne Verdery, NBCUniversal’s chief real-estate development officer. “And we’re grateful to all the community members who came out…

New Product Provides Cyclists with Bike Lane

Riding at night and riding on roads without bicycle lanes are some of the greatest dangers facing cyclists. A new product may help to eliminate some of the risk, however. The new product, called Xfire Safety, illuminates a personal bike lane on the road or pathway for the cyclist. Xfire uses lasers mounted on the bike to display lanes on each side of the cyclist, visible to motorists, pedestrians and other cyclists even under headlamps and streetlights. The device uses two 5-milliwatt red lasers to project the lane, powered by two AAA batteries and retails for $39.99. It also serves as a standard tail light. Without having tested this product, the Bonnici Law Group certainly cannot outright endorse it. XFire is pending approval from the US Food and Drug Administration. It is a very innovative and interesting idea. Since the video shows the product being used only at night, we…
