San Diego Approves 10-Year Effort to Improve Bicycle Safety

The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) has approved the first step in a 10-year, $200 million dollar effort to improve the safety and efficiency of bicycle transportation. SANDAG has a recent history of approving measures promoting the interests and rights of cyclists. Two years ago, SANDAG approved the 2050 Regional Transportation Plan and its Sustainable Communities Strategy, which contains a regional bicycle plan. Duane Roth Day Declared in Honor of Bicycle Accident Victim

November 5 has been declared Duane Roth Day in San Diego in honor of the civic leader who died from injuries sustained in a July 21 bicycle accident. According to the La Jolla Patch, the City Council made the declaration to honor Roth, who a colleague called “a great San Diegan in every sense of the word.” Todd Gloria, San Diego’s interim mayor, told the Patch that Roth was “an entrepreneur and collaborator who changed the way we lived and the way we worked.” We first reported on this story on August 7. Scott began his ride in July by taking part in the annual Seattle-to-Portland Classic, a 205-mile trek between the two northwest cities that included 10,000 riders. However, once the event ended in Portland, Scott kept going. Whidden was determined to match a feat his father had accomplished 30 years ago: riding from Seattle, Washington to Santa Cruz, California. “I was pretty sure I could make it,” Whidden told ThurstonTalk.com. Not only did Scott match his father’s feat, he surpassed it, riding all the way down to Tijuana, Mexico and making the return trip all the way back to Seattle. “I wasn’t planning on doing that,” Whidden said. “But things went better than I thought they would on the way down. So, I figured I’d ride my bike home.” Scott never…
